This time, to the anniversary of the Fulton speech, also known as the iron curtain, we propose a special issue of the " 16 thoughts " , a brief history of the phrase " the gelic curtain " before being used by Winston Churchill.
"Great curtain" didn't come up with Winston Churchill, one of the first known uses of that expression was from 1819. It wasn't his idea to use it to describe the sphere of Soviet influence, either, it was a fascist propaganda. To say that the Fulton speech " cherished curtain " has been given special attention, too, it is not possible to speak only once, almost in the same context in which Allen Dalles used him a few months earlier at a private meeting of the Council on International Relations. And yet it was after Fulton that the "gelic curtain" entered the culture, first as an element of newspaper headlines and caricatures, then in the names of books, then in films and songs, and finally as an object of art, from installations to monuments. What was the role played by the former English Prime Minister in the history of the cherished curtain? On 5 March 1946, standing at the rostrum of the Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, in front of the assembled people, including President Gary Truman of the United States, he said those words out loud, his statements dispersed around the world, beginning to turn the political cliché into a cold war symbol.

In such a situation, the United States will do its utmost to ensure self-preservation, to enhance defence capacity, to develop science and to show cruelty. For the past 44 years, Germany has been surrounded by strong rivals, and this has increased its conviction of the need to collectively defend its existence.
